Lessons Learned: Benzene Distillation Vapor Explosion and Fire

نویسندگان

چکیده

We present here a narrative of an incident that occurred in chemistry laboratory while purifying benzene using distillation apparatus. The resulted injury to graduate student and fire caused approximately $3.5 million damage including repair/refurbishment costs. Unfortunately, due the extent fire, direct cause could not be determined. lessons learned from this have potentially prevented altogether, or at least reduced damage, include performing risk assessment both experiment situation time, maintaining proper housekeeping lab, updated accurate chemical inventory, checking on long duration experiments, always calling for back-up, ensuring lab buildings are up code, wearing personal protective equipment, 911 emergency.

Evolutionary fire ecology: lessons learned from pines.

Macroevolutionary studies of the genus Pinus provide the oldest current evidence of fire as an evolutionary pressure on plants and date back to ca. 125 million years ago (Ma). Microevolutionary studies show that fire traits are variable within and among populations, especially among those subject to different fire regimes. In addition, there is increasing evidence of an inherited genetic basis ...

Fire and explosion risk assessment in a chemical company by the application of DOW fire and explosion index

Background: Fire and explosion hazards are extremely important in processing units. This study was performed to identify the risk centers, the potential damage caused by fire and explosion, and the days of production cessation in the processing company. Materials and Methods: The present qualitative case study was conducted using Dow’s index in 2015. The fire and explosion hazard index...

Liquid - Vapor Equilibrium/Distillation

Background The volatility of a compound is its ability to change into a vapor, or to evaporate at a particular temperature and pressure. The normal boiling point of a liquid usually allows comparison of its volatility to other materials, with lower boiling points indicating greater volatility, but this may be affected somewhat by the presence of other materials. Comparison of the concentration ...

Methods of Quantifying and Mitigating Aerosol Fire and Explosion Hazards Associated with Low Vapor Pressure Liquids

This paper addresses the hazards associated with aerosolized hydraulic fluids and other liquids designed to be relatively non-flammable with respect to flashpoint and vapor pressure. The studies presented seek to understand and quantify conditions and circumstances that can produce such hazardous conditions. US Navy personnel are particularly susceptible to fuel aerosol hazards due to the wides...
